How a Scandal Brought Down Marjorie Wallace’s Miss World Title

At the height of his fame, Tom, who took on the role of sex icon, has previously acknowledged that he had 250 sexual encounters annually. At a time when interracial partnerships were still frowned upon in many parts of America, he had a brief affair with Mary Wilson of the Supremes, one of his many well-publicized romances.

The catch is that Jones had a loving wife named Linda at home while he was pursuing his dreams of being a rock star. She tragically died of lung cancer in 2016, after 59 years of marriage.

“He wasn’t exactly Mr Faithful from the start,” biographer Sean Smith stated in a 2015 interview with the Daily Mail.

Although it’s unknown how much Linda knew about her husband’s dubious past, it’s certain that she had a bad feeling. When he was on tour, Sir Tom claims that the couple had a “don’t ask” rule.

Jones has never held back when talking about his infamous extramarital romances, but his relationship with Marjorie Wallace stands out above the others.

The first American to win the title of Miss World

Born on January 23, 1954, Marjorie Wallace was a woman whose name would soon reverberate through the halls of history. She enthralled the globe with her breathtaking beauty and indisputable charm as an actress, TV personality, model, and beauty queen.

Marjorie had a rebellious streak after her parents’ divorce, which devastated her world when she was just 14 years old.

She demonstrated that she wasn’t scared to follow her own gut by embarking on a 1,200-mile road trip to Miami with a friend, demonstrating her already strong desire for adventure. She also participated in the typical high school activities, such as cheerleading and competitive swimming, which helped her establish a reputation as both athletic and determined. Her adolescence wasn’t all chaos, though.

Relationships with men become more significant in her life as she grew older. She truly began to love the world of music and rebellion when she moved in with a guitarist from the indie rock band Pure Funk when she was seventeen years old.

She would solidify her legacy in 1973 by becoming the first American woman to win the title of Miss World. The 20-year-old Marjorie triumphed against 53 opponents at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

More than just a crown, the title marked the start of a journey that would entwine her destiny with some of the most famous people of her era.

Getting to know Tom Jones

Before his performance at the London Palladium in December 1973, Marjorie, who was 19 at the time and had just won Miss World, met Tom in his dressing room.

His publicist claims that he fell in love with her right away, and the two of them later visited the Westbury Hotel in Mayfair. Since Marjorie and Linda’s birthdays were only a few days apart, Tom purchased two bracelets for them the next month.

Tom was frequently associated with other ladies, but the American beauty queen was unique. Tom reportedly told his pals, “This one could really affect me.”

Tom and Marjorie traveled to Barbados in 1974 for a Miss World TV event, but Marjorie lost her title as a result of their public demonstration of love—a kiss on the beach. Both, however, denied having a romantic relationship at the time.

Marjorie was supposedly engaged to Formula One and Indianapolis 500 driver Peter Revson, which presented a challenge for the stiff English administrators of Miss World.

She continued to have an affair with Tom Jones while she was engaged to Revson, which infuriated Miss World’s founder. Revson unfortunately lost his life in a crash shortly after that while practicing for the 1974 South African Grand Prix. Wearing a gold locket Wallace had given him that was engraved with the words, “If not for you,” the race driver died while traveling to a hospital.

Taking too many sleeping tablets

Naturally, Marjorie was devastated by Revson’s passing, but she was also tortured by other tragic events.

Tom broke up with Marjorie when he knew his childhood sweetheart, Linda, was going to learn about the affair. Marjorie overdosed on sleeping pills because she couldn’t handle her grief.

According to a hospital spokesperson, Marjorie was put on a kidney dialysis machine to assist remove the medicine from her system, but it was impossible to estimate how many pills she had ingested. For the little-town girl who had been chosen as the world’s most beautiful, the tragedy signaled the conclusion of a six-month journey that had started with victory and concluded with pain.

According to Marjorie’s agency, she worked too hard, which is what caused the entire problem. It all got to be too much for her, especially when combined with her personal struggles. Agent Jeff Carey told the Daily Record, “At last, it all came down and hit her on top of the head and knocked her down.”

Marjorie has consistently maintained that the incident was not a suicide attempt and thankfully recovered from it. Two years later, Wallace herself admitted, “I was depressed and OD’d on a few too many sleeping pills.” Her mother, Alice, added, “She might have felt like she couldn’t go on.” I never tried to end my life.

The fact that Tom Jones brought Marjorie a basket of flowers and well wishes when she was recuperating in the Indianapolis hospital is especially intriguing. Tom was performing at the renowned Caesar Palace Hotel in Las Vegas at the time. He was rattled to his core when he heard the news about Marjorie on the radio in his driving. His spokesperson, Chris Hutchings, said that Tom took the news hard and that she met him in Mexico City a few months later after she healed.

Today, Marjorie Wallace

Marjorie, who is now 71, has always had a fascination with entertainment.

Marjorie tried her hand at TV sportscasting with ABC and CBS after moving to New York and having a brief affair with tennis player Jimmy Connors. She also had appearances in advertisements for American Express, Wella, and Ultra Brite.

She married film producer Michael Klein in 1978 after meeting him at a party in 1977. Adam was their son. She was one of the inaugural co-anchors of Entertainment Tonight in 1981, but she declined a reporter’s post a few months later.

She was supposed to be dating Tina Sinatra’s ex-husband Richard Cohen shortly after her marriage to Klein ended in 1982. She wed Donald Soffer, a real estate entrepreneur, in 1994, but the two parted ways in 1996.

However, what was the real outcome for Tom and Marjorie?

After all these years, Tom, who is now 84, remained in touch with her, according to the Sunday Mirror. They recently discussed his recent appointment to the position of judge on The Voice.

“He is really excited to be doing it, and I told him it will be a huge hit if it’s as good as the American version,” Marjorie said. “We remained friends and we stay in touch a lot,” she continued. I have no interest in rehashing our relationship the way it was so long ago, and I wouldn’t want to. However, it’s wonderful to talk to him on the phone occasionally. I constantly keep up with his career, therefore I’m thrilled that he will be mentoring upcoming vocalists. His voice is so lovely.
