Michelle Obama explains why she and Barack chose not to have a third child

Michelle Obama’s Reflections on Motherhood and Raising Daughters

Michelle Obama recently opened up about her experience as a mother, sharing deep insights into raising her beloved daughters, Malia and Sasha. She also revealed why she and Barack chose not to have a third child.

The Emotional Connection with Her Daughters

Michelle reflected on the profound emotional bond she felt with her children from the moment they were born. She admitted that early motherhood brought an overwhelming sense of responsibility. “Oh my God, all you have is me. I feel so bad for you,” she recalled thinking. “You deserve more. I don’t know anything, and now I’m in charge.”

Kylie Kelce, who could relate, laughed and agreed, saying, “This is like my inner dialogue.” Michelle playfully responded, “It is! You know, and you’re doing it a fourth time!”

The Decision Not to Have a Third Child

Michelle shared a funny memory about her and Barack’s conversation about having a third child. While Barack was open to the idea, Michelle made her stance clear with one word: “Dude.” She explained that they were fortunate with their two daughters. “We’re gonna get a crazy one. It’s just the roll of the dice,” Michelle admitted.

Kylie, who’s raising three children and expecting a fourth, understood Michelle’s thoughts. “Well, two good sleepers, I’d call it, too,” she added. Michelle praised Kylie’s courage, acknowledging the unpredictable nature of parenting. “I admire your courage. You don’t know what you’re gonna get,” she said, with Kylie laughing in agreement.

Raising Girls: A Unique Experience

As the conversation turned to their daughters, Michelle and Kylie bonded over the joys and challenges of raising girls. When Kylie mentioned that all her children were girls, Michelle teased, “That’s because that’s what your husband deserves.” She added a similar sentiment about Barack, joking, “The karma was like, ‘Dude, you need a bunch of women in your life, just to smack you around.’”

Kylie agreed, clarifying, “Oh, when I say take care of you, I mean like handle you.” The two moms shared a laugh, reflecting on the ways daughters keep their dads in check. “Are you serious right now?” Kylie imagined her daughters asking their dads. Michelle chimed in with, “Are you going out like that?” They joked that Barack and Jason Kelce should compare notes.

Raising Daughters in the White House

The conversation then shifted to Michelle’s experience raising Malia and Sasha in the White House. When Kylie asked if her daughters ever had any “true kid” moments that made Michelle say, “Oh crap,” Michelle laughed. She explained that while other parents might worry about crayons on the walls, her concerns were much larger.

Her daughters spent more time in the White House than anywhere else. “They were teenagers navigating prom, learning to drive, attending parties, and experiencing first loves—all under the public’s watchful eye.”

Michelle aimed to let her daughters live as normal teenagers while being cautious. “I wanted to give my girls enough rope to live and be normal, but I worried about them turning up on Page Six for doing what normal kids do,” she shared.

Michelle also noted how social media changed the experience for her daughters, in contrast to past First Children like Chelsea Clinton or Amy Carter, who didn’t grow up in the digital age.
