2) After high school students began

“In some contexts, the chant has unfortunately been misused at schools across the country in ways that may make some students feel excluded,” said Daniel Thigpen, Communications Director for the Folsom Cordova Unified School District. “We want students to practice both empathy and patriotism. It’s not about choosing one over the other—it’s about doing both with awareness.”

Student reactions varied. Senior Ryan Bernal shared, “It wasn’t about being upset—I just didn’t understand why we couldn’t say it. For us, it’s about showing that we’re all united, all American.”

Many students echoed this sentiment, expressing that the chant has always been used as a way to build team spirit and celebrate their shared identity. Others saw the school’s message as a valuable opportunity to reflect on how symbols and traditions can impact different members of a diverse community.

Mike Garrison of the California Interscholastic Federation added, “There’s a time and place for everything. Understanding context is key.”

The school’s decision has sparked thoughtful discussion within the community and beyond, with parents, students, and educators weighing in on how to balance pride with inclusivity. The story serves as a reminder of the importance of empathy, communication, and the evolving role of tradition in today’s educational environments.

As the dialogue continues, Vista Del Lago remains focused on supporting a positive and respectful culture—one where school spirit and sensitivity can thrive side by side.
