Young father killed in front of his children after sand dune collapses

Kane Watson was playing with his kids at the beach when tragedy struck.

A family beach day turned into every parent’s worst nightmare when a 28-year-old father was buried alive as his children screamed for help. Now, a partner is left without her soulmate, four children are grieving their dad and another baby, due early next year, will never get to meet him.

A Joyful Outing Turns to Panic

Kane Watson, a devoted dad of four from New Zealand, was spending the day at Muriwai Beach, northwest of Auckland, with his partner and children when tragedy struck. At around 5 p.m. on Saturday, a sand dune collapsed, trapping Kane underneath while he was digging a hole.

Witnesses described the chaos as Kane’s children “screamed for help” and tried desperately to dig their father out.

“In seconds, laughter turned to panic,” family friend Kristalle Tayler wrote. “His family witnessed the unimaginable unfold before their eyes.”

Despite the efforts of nearby bystanders and rescue teams, the recovery took over 15 minutes. He was eventually airlifted to Auckland City Hospital in critical condition, but died on Sunday.

“His Greatest Joy Was Being with His Children”

Kane’s sudden death has left a hole that can never be filled, say those closest to him.

“To have witnessed such a tragedy and now face life without him is almost unbearable,” Tayler added.

More heartbreakingly, Kane and his partner Jasmine were expecting their second child together. The baby, due early next year, will never meet their father, but will grow up hearing stories of the man who loved them before they were born.

“His greatest joy was being with his children — not only his own, but also the kids he cared for and loved as if they were his own.”

A Community Rallies in Grief

In the hours after the tragedy, a GiveALittle fundraiser was launched to help cover Kane’s funeral expenses. It raised over $5,000 in the first two hours and has since passed $16,600, with more than 430 donations pouring in from devastated friends, family, and strangers.

Kane’s sister Shaquille called him her “favourite person” in an emotional statement, adding:

“He was just an amazing dad. That’s what makes it the most heartbreaking.”

A Warning from the Past

This is not the first time tragedy has struck from unstable sand dunes. In 2021, a 10-year-old Brazilian boy, Arthur Correa Nunes, died after a hole collapsed while he was playing. Years earlier, 14-year-old Eoin Corcoran was crushed in a similar dune accident in Ireland.

For Kane Watson’s loved ones, the pain is still raw, but the outpouring of support is a reminder of just how many lives he touched.

“Kane’s absence leaves a hole that can never be filled.”
