Polly Holliday, the Alabama-born actress best known for her sassy catchphrase “Kiss my grits!” on the CBS sitcom Alice and its spinoff Flo, has died at the age of 88. Her agent and longtime friend, Dennis Aspland, confirmed to The New York Times that Holliday passed away Tuesday at her home in Manhattan. Born on July 2, 1937, in Jasper, Alabama, Holliday grew up surrounded by Southern humor and storytelling.

Her father was a truck driver, and during summers she often traveled with him, experiences that later shaped her iconic portrayal of outspoken waitresses. She once told People magazine that characters like Flo were inspired by real women who used humor to brighten everyone’s day.

After studying at Florida State University, Holliday initially worked as a teacher before pursuing her passion for acting. She began in theater before transitioning to television and film. Her career breakthrough came in 1976 when she joined Alice as Florence Jean “Flo” Castleberry, a bold waitress at Mel’s Diner. The role made her a household name and led to the spinoff series Flo, which aired from 1980 to 1981.

Beyond sitcom fame, Holliday enjoyed a successful career in film and television, appearing in Gremlins (1984), Mrs. Doubtfire (1993), The Parent Trap (1998), and shows such as The Golden Girls and Home Improvement.
